The good news is that solar panels are deemed a “permitted development” so for most properties planning permission will not be required. There are a few exceptions:

Flat Roofs

On a flat roof the panels must be raised to an optimum angle for efficiency purposes. This means that the panels often can sit above the highest part of the roof which is one of the planning triggers.

Listed Building

Listed building consent is required.

Property is in a Conservation Area

Any local planning authority restrictions need to be complied with. If you don’t know whether you are in a Conservation Area you can check on your Local Authority’s website.
